When a crimping tool is used on a terminal, two crimps take place at the same time. One is the electrical connection between conductor and terminal. The other is the insulation crimp which provides strain relief against vibration and tension. It is important that the electrical connection is gas tight without any voids between the wire strands and the terminal. If there any voids present, then corrosion can occur causing resistance and excessive heat which damages the electrical connection. Using a good quality crimping tool will ensure that a full, gas tight crimp is produced preventing future deterioration of the electrical connection and insulation breakage

From JST a lightweight, reliable and easy to use hand operated semi-automatic crimping tool designed to crimp contacts onto a single piece of wire directly from a contact strip or pre-loaded reel of contacts. This hand tool consists of two ergonomically designed handles, a ratchet mechanism, precision ground dies and a reel holder onto which a pre-loaded reel of contacts can be mounted. An empty reel is also included with this tool. Guide and alignment features are built into the tool for accurate positioning of the reeled contacts.

The ratchet is pre-set to a specific force and remains locked until the handles of the tool are fully closed and the dies are bottomed. The handles cannot be opened until a full crimping cycle is achieved therefore preventing partial crimps. Once the cycle is complete the handles will re-open. The ratchet also enables the operator to repeatedly produce consistent, high-quality crimps. In the event of mis-crimps or jamming the handles of the tool can be released by turning the knurled shaft counter clockwise with a screwdriver

The reel of contacts is mounted on a shaft which can be easily adjusted by loosening a nut on the spindle

This crimp tool has a feed lever which makes crimping contacts from a mini reel quick and simple. The lever engages the feed fingers with the feed holes in the contact strip. To advance to the next terminal on the strip simply push the lever towards the side of the tool.

The hand tool features distance plates or shims marked with different wire sizes which are used to achieve different crimp heights. These plates are stored on the side of the tool. The correct plate is selected by simply undoing the retaining screw and inserting the plate into the locator.

The terminal strip can be released at any time by pressing a red lever on the back of the tool which disengages the feed fingers that hold the strip in place
