    Dimmer Switches

Dimmer switches are for adjusting and setting the lighting mood, to avoid any harsh lighting and glare. This can be done using a rotary, sliding or touch adjustments. Benefits include reduced energy consumption and improved longevity of bulbs.

    Types

The two types of dimmer switches are:

    • Leading-edge dimmer switches which are used for incandescent and halogen lamps. They allow for the retrofitting of LED bulbs if required. These switches employ simple technologies and are a good option where cost is a consideration.
    • Trailing-edge dimmers can also be used with incandescent light bulbs and halogen light bulbs, but the 'soft start' feature they employ can result in a premature failure in filament bulbs. Therefore, this type of dimmer is better suited for use with LED lamps.

    Features

Dimmer switches have various design features, including:

    • Low profile: a slim but raised profile that permits installation on uneven surfaces.
    • Moulded: a plastic switch offering an economical alternative where function is more important than style.
    • Screwless: provides a slick finish with no visible fixings, installed by clipping onto a rear mount.
